My desire for my own calling is to imitate the first-century disciple and gospel minister Barnabas. This means to be “one who encourages” (as his name means) and "a good man full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, and a great many people were added to the Lord” (Acts 11:24). May this happen again, but in Tokyo this time!
Barnabas was "sent out" from the church at Antioch with Paul to give the gospel and plant churches on the first mission journey to the Gentiles (Acts 13:2). I want to imitate his faith: a warm-hearted, humble, modern-day encourager. He had wise spiritual insights and there was alot of respect for him. I am seeking to accompany a good friend, a Japanese brother in Christ, and fellow minister, along with the rest of the church-planting team of Grace City Church to see Tokyo renewed for God's glory.
However, maybe the most important lesson from Barnabas' life is this. He is one more proof that God uses the imperfect - sinful people - to accomplish his purposes. He temporarily broke table fellowship with the Gentiles of Antioch (Galatians 2:13). This gives me great hope for God's grace to triumph in Tokyo despite me, as he always uses sinners for His glory.
Jesus was sent to us, for us to redeem us and all things - that is the most encouraging reality in the world. Jesus is the ultimate encourager. The pressure is off of us.
